The Biodiversity Information Center was founded in 2006 and operates as a separate organizational unit of the Faculty of Biology at the Department of Plant Ecology and Geography and the Department of Animal Ecology and Geography, respectively, within the Institute of Botany and the Institute of Zoology.
The key activity of the Center in the previous period relates to the implementation of multi-year projects aimed at establishing an ecological network in the Republic of Serbia, the European Union's Natura 2000 ecological network as part of the ecological network of the Republic of Serbia, and the development of red lists and red books of flora, fauna and fungi of the Republic of Serbia. The Center has been implementing these three projects continuously since 2006 for the needs of the Serbian Institute for Nature Conservation.
In addition, since 2019, the Center and its collaborators have been participating in the preparation of various biodiversity studies for the purposes of preparing environmental impact studies or ecological networks. The most significant results in this segment include the biodiversity study of the Jadar area, as well as studies of the impact on the ecological network of three wetlands: the Zasavica Special Nature Reserve, the Jegrička Nature Park, and the Trskovača Marsh protected habitat.
Finally, the Center has developed communication with non-governmental organizations and individuals to whom, based on official requests, it provides data on species and habitats of conservation importance that are present in areas that are under various negative impacts of construction or land use.
