Center for Genotoxicology and Ecogenotoxicology

The Center for Genotoxicology and Ecogenotoxicology of the Faculty of Biology was established in 2012 with the aim of engaging in scientific research and educational activities, participating in joint research projects and providing commercial services. The Center's research areas include the detection of agents with a potentially harmful effect on the human DNA molecule, as well as agents that lead to genotoxic pollution of various ecosystems. This aspect is very important because changes in the structure of the hereditary material of cells can affect the entire organism, but also the entire ecosystem and biodiversity.

Cytotoxic, mutagenic/antimutagenic, genotoxic/antigenotoxic, toxic and ecogenotoxic effects are detected in vitro and in vivo by prokaryotic and eukaryotic tests (MTT, MTS, Artemia salina, SOS/umuC, alkaline and Fpg-modified SCGE, micronucleus test). The Center's associates, in addition to participating in the teaching and scientific research activities of the Faculty, also cooperate with other scientific institutions from the country (projects of the Ministry of Science) and abroad (EU funds, bilateral projects). All of the above has contributed to a significant increase in the quality and number of published high-quality scientific papers (>60) since the establishment of the Center.

Also, research results in the field of genotoxicology/ecogenotoxicology have been included in over 20 doctoral dissertations and more than 30 specialist and master's theses, whose authors continue their careers, in addition to the Faculty of Biology, in other scientific and research institutions in Serbia and abroad.
