The Center for Forensic and Applied Molecular Genetics (CFPMG) was established as an independent organizational unit on July 12, 2017. Assistant Professor Dr. Dušan Keckarević, today an associate professor, was elected as the head of the Center. After its establishment, the associates of the Center for PCR Application and Development, later the Center for Human Molecular Genetics, whose area of interest over the years has been focused on forensic DNA analysis, population-genetic analysis of human populations, genetic genealogy and archaeogenetics, continued to develop their scientific and professional competencies within the Center for Forensic and Applied Molecular Genetics. The CFPMG team participated in the establishment of molecular genetic diagnostics of a large number of hereditary neurological, neuromuscular and other diseases, as evidenced by the doctoral theses of the Center's associates, as well as published scientific papers.
Since 2002, the associates of the CFPMG have been engaged in forensic DNA analysis in criminal legal procedures, first as associates and then as independent court experts of the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Serbia. During more than twenty years of work, the associates of the Center have provided expert testimony in over 12000 criminal cases before courts of all levels in the country and the region. The associates of the Center are also active participants in establishing protocols and standards in the field of forensic DNA expertise. Thanks to the CFPMG, the Faculty of Biology is today recognized as a leading institution for forensic DNA analysis, entrusted with the most sensitive criminal cases for expert testimony.
