The Center for Electron Microscopy (CEM) was founded in mid-May 2009 with the desire to share, through teaching and research, the knowledge acquired through the School of Microscopy of our faculty since its founding, and the School of Electron Microscopy for more than half a century.
The founder and head of CEM is Prof. Aleksandra Korac, and the members are senior research associate Dr. Igor Golic, research associate Dr. Marija Ilic, and doctoral student Sara Stojanovic, a graduate molecular biologist and physiologist.
CEM is a faculty base for scientific projects and for the preparation of master's and specialist theses, as well as doctoral dissertations. CEM members are equally committed to transferring knowledge to students and through courses at all levels of study. CEM is equipped with a transmission electron microscope and accompanying equipment for sample preparation and section contrast. Electron microscopy is a sophisticated method that allows for the observation of molecules in high resolution, the ultrastructure of cells and tissues.
In addition to routine sample preparation, imaging and analysis, CEM collaborators also work on protocol development, specific biomolecule contrast and gold particle labeling. Newer methods that have been introduced are correlative and ZD microscopy. In addition to cooperation with faculties and institutes of the University of Belgrade, Serbia and the region, CEM also provides transmission electron microscope analysis services.
CEM has so far performed a large number of analyses of nanoparticles, nanoparticle uptake into cells, viruses, exosomes, bacterial cells, algae, fungi, plants and animals. Cellular changes in rare diseases, cancer and other human diseases are also analyzed. The results of collaborations and analyses have been published in renowned journals, and the research leaders have won numerous awards, making CEM recognizable in the country and the region.
