The University of Belgrade is the oldest (1808) and largest university in Serbia and has the status of a higher education institution of national importance. It consists of 31 faculties in the fields of social and humanities, medicine, natural and mathematical sciences and technical and technological sciences. In addition, it contains 11 research institutes, a university library and 9 university centers.

The University of Kragujevac was founded in 1976. Its foundation was preceded by two departments of the Belgrade Faculty of Economics and Mechanical Engineering, which began operating in late 1960. The University of Kragujevac includes: the Faculty of Economics, the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, the Faculty of Law and the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, as well as the Faculty of Pedagogy and Technology in Čačak and two research institutes.

The University of Niš, founded in 1965, has 14 faculties. Since the establishment of the University of Niš to this day, more than 75 thousand students have obtained a diploma from this higher education institution, more than 10 thousand have completed master's studies, and over 2.500 candidates have obtained a doctorate.

The University of Novi Sad, with almost 50.000 students and 5.000 employees, is one of the largest scientific and educational centers in Central Europe. The University offers around 350 accredited study programs at the undergraduate, master's, specialist and doctoral levels. The University was founded in 1960 and has 14 faculties and 3 institutes.

The University of Pristina with its temporary seat in Kosovska Mitrovica was founded in 1969. Today, it has around 9000 students at all levels of study. The University employs 794 teachers and teaching assistants, as well as 368 administrative and professional assistants. The University operates as part of the educational system of the Republic of Serbia.

The private university "Metropolitan" developed from the Faculty of Information Technology, which was founded in 2005. In addition to FIT, the University today also consists of the Faculty of Management - FM and the Faculty of Digital Arts - FDU. It is the first university in Serbia to introduce distance education.
