The University of Belgrade is the oldest (1808) and largest university in Serbia and has the status of a higher education institution of national importance. The University of Kragujevac was founded in 1976. Its foundation was preceded by two departments of the Belgrade Faculty of Economics and Mechanical Engineering, which began operating in late 1960. The University of Pristina with its temporary seat in Kosovska Mitrovica was founded in 1969. Today, it has around 9000 students at all levels of study. The University employs 794 teachers and teaching assistants, as well as 368 administrative and professional assistants. The University operates as part of the educational system of the Republic of Serbia.

The private university "Metropolitan" developed from the Faculty of Information Technology, which was founded in 2005. In addition to FIT, the University today also consists of the Faculty of Management - FM and the Faculty of Digital Arts - FDU. It is the first university in Serbia to introduce distance education.
