The administration of the Faculty of Biology of the University of Belgrade is following with great concern the current events on the streets of our city, where we are witnessing the use of force and violent detention of students, high school students and other citizens by police officers.

As an academic institution founded on the principles of dialogue, critical thinking, and freedom of expression, we feel a duty to direct the strongest condemnation of every form of violence. The use of excessive force against young people, many of whom are our students, is unacceptable and deeply concerning. Universities and colleges must be safe environments for their students, and their safety and integrity must be inviolable, both inside and outside the institutions.

We call on all parties to exercise maximum restraint, peace and tolerance: Violence is never and can never be the solution..

At the same time, we appeal to the competent institutions, primarily the Ministry of Internal Affairs and judicial authorities, to perform their duties professionally, independently and responsibly, in accordance with the Constitution and laws of the Republic of Serbia. It is of crucial importance that they are not subject to political or any other pressure and that every case of exceeding their authority is thoroughly investigated and those responsible are sanctioned.

We believe that solutions to all social problems must be sought exclusively through open dialogue with full respect for institutions that belong to all citizens.
