In accordance with the World Bank's Environmental and Social Management Framework, the Faculty of Biology, University of Belgrade invites the public, bodies, organizations and individuals interested in the ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AND SOCIAL IMPACT MITIGATION MANAGEMENT PLAN for the project "Characterization of cerebral interstitial fluid secretome following intermittent theta burst stimulation - deciphering the neurochemistry of brain stimulation (CEREBRO)" to PUBLIC CONSULTATIONS. The project "CEREBRO", funded by the Science Fund of the Republic of Serbia within the PROMIS2023 program, and implemented by a project team from the Faculty of Biology, University of Belgrade and the Vinča Institute of Nuclear Sciences - an Institute of National Importance for the Republic of Serbia under the leadership of Dr. Milorad Dragić, aims to examine the effects of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), and its specific protocol – intermittent theta burst stimulation (iTBS) on brain neurochemistry in healthy laboratory rats. rTMS and its various protocols, such as iTBS, are used to treat some neuropsychiatric conditions (such as depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder) and research suggests that this type of brain neuromodulation that is completely non-invasive and painless can also be used to treat neurodegenerative diseases. Although a lot of data indicates the importance of this approach in neuroscience, it is still not known what the stimulation itself changes at the level of brain neurochemistry – the release of neurotransmitters, growth factors, cytokines and chemokines, as well as how long the effects of the stimulation last. Therefore, the main goal of the CEREBRO project is to examine the acute, subchronic and chronic effects of iTBS on the secretome (everything that nerve cells release into the extracellular space) in the prefrontal cortex of healthy rats. Understanding neurochemistry and factors released after short-term and long-term iTBS administration, as well as how long-lasting such changes are, can significantly contribute to the further use of this approach for the treatment of central nervous system diseases and provide a clear basis for when, how much and whether such an approach makes sense in the treatment of various pathologies.
